Turning Obstacles into Opportunities with a Growth Mindset
By: Avé Mullen
ATLANTA, GA – On Wednesday, October 26th, the Ladders Program held its fourth Soft Skills workshop, focusing on nurturing a growth mindset. The program continues to see an increase in participants and community involvement.
Four representatives from the Fulton County Solicitor's General’s office joined this session, helping us in our mission to empower young individuals to make positive contributions to their personal and professional lives, ultimately reducing recidivism and reuniting families in Georgia.
The workshop featured guest speaker Julius Cave, Program Manager for the Leading Men Fellowship in Atlanta. Mr. Cave recruits and supports college students in their roles within the preschool education system. His presentation emphasized the importance of believing in one's abilities, even when facing seemingly impossible challenges.
Mr. Cave engaged with each participant, encouraging them to identify their strengths. To illustrate the power of a growth mindset, he distributed Rubik's cubes, a classic symbol of a complex problem. Many participants initially doubted their ability to solve the puzzle, but the lesson was clear: when confronted with difficulties, one should seek solutions and take responsibility rather than giving up.
Following Mr. Cave's presentation, an open discussion allowed the entire group to explore topics such as optimism, self-belief, and the idea that failure can be a steppingstone to personal growth.
"Embracing a growth mindset fuels their aspirations," Mr. Cave said. "All of the Ladders program participants have remarkable opportunities on the horizon. I firmly believe that mindset greatly influences our commitment, daily approach, and pursuit of those opportunities. This is why we prioritize growth mindset as one of the initial topics in our The Literacy Lab's Leading Men Fellowship program."
Participants next broke into smaller group breakout sessions about professional interview etiquette, the application process, and received tailored advice to help them achieve their individual career goals.
The workshop wrapped up with a group reading of an article offering additional tips on developing a growth mindset. Participants took the article home to reinforce the concept. The workshop was a resounding success, equipping participants with the knowledge and motivation they need to pursue their dreams confidently.
